We are so excited that the time has finally come to welcome the British Guild of Travel Writers back to the United States of America and for the first time to Charleston and South Carolina. Three hundred and forty-nine years ago, a group of English settlers claimed this site as Charles Town. Today, we celebrate the return of that connection with nonstop flights on British Airways between Charleston and London's Heathrow Airport. A trip that once took six months, over 349 years ago, is now just over seven hours today.
Today in the Lowcountry, history is not relegated to a plaque on a landmark. Instead, it is a sense of place—a connection to the past—that lives in the hearts of locals, is apparent in regional traditions, graces the facades of homes, punctuates the vernacular and seasons the food. While the Charleston area is indeed a veritable living museum, it is also a bustling epicenter of culture, invigorating outdoor activity and sumptuous dining that welcomes close to four million visitors annually.-
